چکیده

In this paper, we present a new approach to hpadaptive finite element methods. Our a posteriori error estimates and hp-refinement indicator are inspired by the work on gradient/derivative recovery of Bank and Xu [12,13]. For element τ of degree p, R(∂ uhp), the (piece-wise linear) recovered function of ∂ pu is used to approximate |ε|1,τ = |ûp+1−up|1,τ , which serves as our local error indicator. Under sufficient conditions on the smoothness of u, it can be shown that ‖∂ (ûp+1 − up)‖0,Ω is a superconvergent approximation of ‖(I − R)∂ uhp‖0,Ω . Based on this, we develop a heuristic hp-refinement indicator based on the ratio between the two quantities on each element. Also in this work, we introduce nodal basis functions for special elements where the polynomial degree along edges is allowed to be different from the overall element degree. Several numerical examples are provided to show the effectiveness of our approach.

Domain Decomposition and hp-Adaptive Finite Elements

In this work, we report on an ongoing project to implement an hp-adaptive finite element method. The inspiration of this work came from the development of certain a posteriori error estimates for high order finite elements based on superconvergence Bank and Xu [2003a,b], Bank et al. [2007]. We wanted to create an environment where these estimates could be evaluated in terms of their ability to ...

Superconvergence of the Derivative Patch Recovery Technique and a Posteriori Error Estimation

The derivative patch recovery technique developed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu 1]-3] for the nite element method is analyzed. It is shown that, for one dimensional problems and two dimensional problems using tensor product elements, the patch recovery technique yields superconvergence recovery for the derivatives. Consequently, the error estimator based on the recovered derivative is asymptotically e...

Analysis of the Superconvergent Patch Recovery Technique and a Posteriori Error Estimator in the Finite Element Method (ii)

SUMMARY This is the second in a series of two papers in which the patch recovery technique proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu 1]-3] is analyzed. In the rst paper 4], we have shown that the recovered derivative by the least squares tting is superconvergent for the two point boundary value problems. In the present work, we consider the two dimensional case in which the tensor product elements are us...

Natural Superconvergence Points in Three-Dimensional Finite Elements

A systematic and analytic process is conducted to identify natural superconvergence points of high degree polynomial C0 finite elements in a three-dimensional setting. This identification is based upon explicitly constructing an orthogonal decomposition of local finite element spaces. Derivative and function value superconvergence points are investigated for both the Poisson and the Laplace equ...

Can We Have Superconvergent Gradient Recovery Under Adaptive Meshes?

~ We study. adaptive finite element methods for elliptic problems with domain corner singularities. Our model problem is the two dimensional Poisson equation. Results of this paper are two folds. First, we prove that there exists an adaptive mesh (gauged by a discrete mesh density function) under which the recovered.gradient by the Polynomial Preserving Recovery (PPR) is superconvergent. Second...
